What would you do if someone close to you suddenly had to be rushed to hospital? Are you adequately prepared?

You’re likely to have to provide paramedics, nurses and doctors with detailed health information. This may include details of medication that is being used and medical conditions like Asthma or diabetes. You may also note medication that is being used, recent illnesses and injuries along with vaccination details.

We tend to think that, if the worst should happen, all we need to do is call the emergency services. But they will have many important questions that need to be answered and, ideally, you need to be prepared to answer them.

One solution to this problem is to produce an Emergency Document for every member of your family and your household. The same system might even be used in the workplace. The Emergency Document would provide healthcare professionals with details of medical conditions, allergy information, medicatio that might be taken along with vaccination details and additional relevant information.

These documents are best compiled by the individual concerned. When writing the emergency document it should be assumed that you are unable to communicate with the doctors and nurses. It is worth considering what sort of information they would benefit from knowing under these circumstances?

Keep all of your household emergency documents printed out and in a safe location. Keep your emergency documents up to date with the latest medical information. Take the documents with you when you go to the emergency room but hand on to the originals. Your Emergency documentation can save a lot of time spent repeating the same details over and over again.

Emergency documents can be particularly useful when travelling. Think of the document as an addition to your travel insurance policy. It would take only a few minutes to produce a document like this but it could save your life.

if you’re an older traveler you would do well to consider senior travel insurance and you may like to consider pre-existing medical condition travel insurance.
